Once you have made the decision to add a pool or hot tub to your backyard, the next step is to complete the scene with a landscape that suits your needs and creates colour and interest, without requiring too much maintenance. After all, you want to have enough time to relax and enjoy your new backyard oasis. Here are some basic tips to follow when landscaping around your pool.

Say no to thorns

Avoid overly thorny or otherwise dangerous plants around your pool for the sake of everyone’s safety and well-being. Climbing back behind a Spanish bayonet yucca or rose bushto retrieve an errant ball used by your kids for pool volleyball is no fun.

Remember the splashing of chemically-treated water.

If you’ve owned a pool for any amount of time, you’ve probably discovered that most pool sweeping devices are less than perfect. Sometimes they can make a mess – water gets splashed up in large amounts onto the deck and possibly onto surrounding plants and soil. However, unless you put an inordinate amount of chlorine and other chemicals in your pool, the amount of damage caused by treated water splashing on your plants will be minimal. Same goes for salt water system pools. Excessive, continuous runoff will cause problems, though. If you see evidence of leaves looking “bleached” or just outright dying right around the pool area, it’s time to investigate.

Avoid planting huge trees anywhere near the pool

Avoid large trees or shrubs with extensive root systems that could damage the underground structure of your pool, such as mulberry and cottonwood trees and photinias. Another offshoot of having a tree so close to the pool would be the constant falling leaves which could also cause your filters to clog. Big trees attract birds too, so you may want to take into account the fact that some of their droppings may end up in the pool water.
